Assistance in restoration of damaged sewerage facilities in the Great East Japan Earthquake

On March 11, 2011, the largest earthquake recorded in Japan occurred off the Pacific coast of Tohoku district. It was magnitude 9.0 and caused massive tsunami. The earthquake and tsunami not only destroyed houses and infrastructures but took so many lives. Needless to say, a large number of sewerage facilities were also damaged seriously.

In response to this situation, we, JS, sent the staff (three engineers) as the early dispatching party to the stricken area of Tohoku district on March 12, 2011 for gathering information on the extent of damage of sewerage facilities and the assistance of municipal wastewater treatment plants restoration, associating with the early dispatching party of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

The early dispatching party joined the staff in Tohoku regional office of JS after entering the affected area by automobile.

And then, they had meetings to discuss the way of restoration of sewerage facilities with staffs of the Miyagi prefectural office, the Sendai city office and the Tohoku regional bureau of MLIT on March 13, 2011. They also had a meeting with the staff of Iwate prefectural office on March 14, 2011.

On the basis of local municipalities’ requests, the supporting team was organized in JS and dispatched as follows;

1st supporting team of restoration of damaged sewerage facilities
Destination:   Miyagi prefecture, Sendai city
Number of staff:   4 persons
Period:   about 7 days
Day of departure:   March 16, 2011

JS will continue to support local municipalities whose wastewater treatment plants were damaged by the earthquake and tsunami until they will get better performance they used to be.
